FLAMINGO CAFE

Jackie Kang

GENRE:  Women's Fiction

BLURB:

A storm is brewing off the coast of Florida, but chaos has already made landfall for four women of Palm Beach society. Abigail, a self-appointed Cuban princess and queen of the WAGs, suddenly finds herself penniless and on the streets. Claudia, a Greek entrepreneur and CEO of a prestigious international clothing line, is entering her golden years only to realize secrets can weigh you down. Cassy, a barista and owner of the Flamingo Cafe, is doing her best to recover from a tragic past. Meanwhile her best friend, Bri, also harbors a secret: a romantic tet-a-tet with Cassy's brother Nick. Each woman has played her part in a society obsessed with appearances and secrecy for years. So, when Hurricane Odette blows through town, exposing those secrets, it's no surprise their lives collide like a clap of thunder. Only one thing is certain: if they don't work together, Mother Nature will teach them the hardest lessons of their lives.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

I think about my precious treasures, secure on the second floor of our sprawling hacienda, and wonder why, with all the charm that comes with living the life of a football player's fiancé, I still want to scream?

Oh, who am I kidding? The answer is blindingly obvious.

Every day is the same. Stale as a loaf of Mamá’s Cuban bread left on the counter overnight. I plaster on a fake smile and embark on my predetermined routine of being a player's fiancé. I show up for the exercise, the luncheons, and the gossip, never deviating from my role or straying from my duties. I make nice with the other wives and girlfriends of the players (also known as the WAGs)—and even though I'm fully aware half of the women surrounding my table have slept with my fiancé́—I keep my Palm Beach composure and pretend like there is nowhere else in the world I would rather be than at a luncheon with five other fake bitches.

A few of the non-WAGS (also known as the Palm Beach Princesses or PBPs) I socialize with actually track the team stats and rankings, trying their best to impress me with their football knowledge. Still, most of them simply feign an interest, so they can air-kiss my cheek and say they know Julian Mendez's fiancé, the soon-to- be Abigail Mendez.

It's only when lunch is complete that I finally find myself free and able to breathe for a precious few hours before Riley arrives home from school.

This valuable time is my one chance to release any built-up tension. And Lord knows I have tension. Not a single person could deny I deserve a little R&R. Especially not after all the early morning hours chasing that damn yellow ball up and down the tennis courts of the Palm Bay Vista Country Club. Always ensuring I've burned at least five hundred calories and my calves ache before I allow myself to limp off the court. But it doesn't stop there. Oh no, tennis is promptly followed up with aerobics and then weights. All done with the simple intention of maintaining the physique required to keep Julian's eye—among his other body parts—from straying. But, after last night, it is becoming embarrassingly apparent all my efforts are in vain.
