Deadly Summer Nights
Deadly Summer Nights (A Catskill Summer Resort Mystery)
by Vicki Delany
Vicky Delany has set this
series off to a fabulous start. She takes the reader back in time in a
very comfortable way. She sets the scene wonderfully with detailed
descriptions and brings the area to life featuring a core set of
characters along with some of the 400+ guests, 1 talented entertainer,
and the nephew of the deceased who wants some answers.
~Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book
Two elements initially drew
me to Deadly Summer Nights – that gorgeous cover & the fact that
Vicki Delany wrote it. I’m delighted (and not surprised) to report that
the story inside is just as good as it looks like I knew it would be.

A summer of fun at a Catskills resort comes to an abrupt end when a guest is found murdered, in this new 1950s set mystery series.
It’s the summer of 1953, and Elizabeth Grady is settling into Haggerman’s Catskills Resort. As a vacation getaway, Haggerman’s is ideal, and although Elizabeth’s ostentatious but well-meaning mother is new to running the resort, Elizabeth is eager to help her organize the guests and the entertainment acts. But Elizabeth will have to resort to untested abilities if she wants to save her mother’s business.
When a reclusive guest is found dead in a lake on the grounds, and a copy of The Communist Manifesto is found in his cabin, the local police chief is convinced that the man was a Russian spy. But Elizabeth isn’t so sure, and with the fate of the resort hanging in the balance, she’ll need to dodge red herrings, withstand the Red Scare, and catch a killer red-handed.
Welcome to Haggerman’s Catskills Resort
By Olivia Peters from the Catskills Summer Resort series by Vicki Delany
August 2021
Welcome! I’m Olivia Peters owner of Haggerman’s Catskills Resort. I’m sure you’ve heard of me. Hollywood? Broadway?
Yes, that’s me! I am that Olivia Peters. Thank you, you’re too kind. Yes, I’m retired now. The professional life of a dancer isn’t that long, you know. Bones to do wear out. Unfortunately. I was nicely settling into life as a patron of the arts – hosting reading salons, mentoring new young dancers and actors, introducing everyone to everyone – when I had an… unfortunate downturn in my finances. Around that time a gentleman I’d never even met, who pronounced himself my greatest fan, died – most unfortunate yes - and left me his only possession – Haggerman’s Catskills Resort.
Rather an unexpected turn of fortune, I’m sure you’ll agree.
What do I know about managing employees, balancing account books, running a business, playing host to bratty children, demanding adults and wayward teenagers? Not a single thing. And I have absolutely no intention of learning. Fortunately, my daughter Elizabeth does know about business. She didn’t follow in my footsteps (that girl is totally tone deaf and has two left feet) but she is a highly qualified bookkeeper and was the manager of female staff at a big New York City department store. I managed to convince Elizabeth to move to the Catskills and run my resort for me.
I, of course, help when I can. My star appeal attracts the guests. I provide a touch of glamour around the dinner table or at the cocktail hour. Housewives from the Five Burroughs absolutely LOVE that. I make use of my extensive list of contacts in the world of entertainment to get the best singers and comedians to perform here.
That’s enough, don’t you think? I’m not going to get involved in the business of that poor man who drowned in the lake. Communists, the police are saying. What nonsense. I’ll let Elizabeth sort it all out.
